According to recent estimates, world production of mandarins/tangerines in 2021/22 is expected to reach a record high, up 2.8 million tonnes from the previous season.
The recent report issued by the USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) estimates global mandarin/tangerine production at 37.9 million tonnes. This represents an increase of 2.8 million tonnes compared to the previous season.
This increase in production is driven by expected growth in China, which should more than compensate for expected declines in the United States and the European Union:
.China: production is estimated at 28.0 million due to favourable weather conditions and an increase in area and yields
.European Union: production is expected to decrease by about 8% to 3.0 million tonnes due to unfavourable weather conditions in Spain.
.Turkey: production is expected to increase by 150,000 tonnes to 1.8 million due to favourable weather conditions and an increase in area and yields.
.Morocco: production is expected to increase by 13% to 1.4 million tonnes due to favourable weather conditions.
.United States: production is expected to fall by a quarter to just under 800,000 tonnes due to adverse weather conditions in California.
The report points out that both production and consumption are at record levels. With volumes more than doubling between the 2001/02 and 2021/22 seasons.
