Spain, concern about Moroccan tomato imports

Spain is concerned about tomato imports from Morocco, the Spanish Federation of fresh fruit & vegetables producers and exporters associations FEPEX reports.
The data released by FEPEX highlight that during this campaign volumes of tomatoes from Morocco may reach the record figure of 400,000 tons, thus marking +31% compared to last season.
During the past four years, tomato imports from Morocco have grown on average by 60%, from 194,310 tons in 2004 to 305,542 in 2008 (source: Eurostat).
Volumes of fruit and vegetables with Moroccan origin have in general been increasing year after year. In 2008 they reached 955,700 tons (+11% over the previous year and +32% over 2004, according to Eurostat).
According to the Spanish association, the European Union may not be applying the regulations on tomato imports. The agreement between the EU and Morocco provides for an import of 213,000 tons with advantageous prices (46 euro cents per kg).
