The melon genome sequenced for the first time

The melon genome has been deciphered for the first time by Spanish researchers and will improve varieties.
Spanish scientists have sequenced the genome for melons.
Genome Spain Foundation in collaboration with nine research centres and five companies have developed the Melonimics program .
The results show 27,427 genes and have identified 411 genes that provide resistance to disease, 26
genes associated with the accumulation of carotenoids (which gives the colour of the pulp) an 63 to accululation sugar (which give the flavour) .
