Spain
Saturday 10 November 2007
After the successful campaign 2006/07, which concluded with an outstanding 89% production rise compared to previous year (14,328,944 kg against 7,572,381 in 2005/06), the Committee for the Protected Geographical Indication citrus fruits from Valencia is now getting ready for a further positive season this year. Promotional campaigns are currently under preparation in some foreign Counties such as France, Italy, Germany and the UK - beyond the natural marketing on the domestic market.
The relevant increase of supply for the international market was possible thanks to the introduction of six new commercial operators (private enterprises and cooperatives) that have joined the PGI committee, which can now count on a total of 38 packing station. The cultivation surface dedicated to PGI citrus fruits has therefore reached 1,500 ha.
PGI Valencia Citrus Fruits’ promotional campaigns abroad, at international exhibitions and points of sale, has relevantly favoured the growth of demand for this produce.
Recently this promotion has gained further importance through the joint actions developed by PGI Valencia Citrus Fruits with the Denominated Origin persimmon Ribera del Xuquer at international level, after signing a collaboration agreement. The persimmon season is actually simultaneous to the earlier stage of the citrus fruit campaign from October to December.
The joint committees already participated in the Anuga fair in Koln (13-17 October) and in the London IFE World Fruit & Vegetable (21-22 October). Further events have been scheduled to increase the repute of these Valencian products acknowledged by Protected Origin labels and make the Valencian fruit and vegetables’ richness popular in Europe.
