Japan adds new Chilean areas to Mediterranean fruit fly quarantine controls

Japan’s Plant Protection Station introduced new quarantine-regulated areas in Chile following detections of Mediterranean fruit fly.

Two areas affected

New regulated zones have been established in parts of Valparaíso district in the Valparaíso Region and Huasco district in the Atacama Region.

The decision followed confirmed captures of Mediterranean fruit fly in Chile. The pest is closely monitored because it can attack a wide range of fruit crops and trigger additional phytosanitary requirements in international trade.

Import controls adjusted

The new designations mean products covered by Japan’s plant quarantine rules from the affected areas will be handled under the relevant restrictions.

Japan regularly updates its quarantine areas as pest situations change in supplying countries.
