Michoacán avocados to seek geographical indication protection in 2026

Eligibility depends on meeting defined standards for growing and harvesting.
Growers and industry bodies in Mexico’s leading avocado region have formally begun the process to secure geographical indication (GI) status for “Aguacate de la franja de Michoacán”, aiming for registration in 2026.
The Association of Avocado Producers and Packers of Mexico (APEAM), together with Mexico’s Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI), the state Secretary of Economic Development, the research centre CIATEJ and the Association of Michoacán Avocado Producers, submitted the official application to the IMPI. A commemorative plaque was unveiled to mark the start of the procedure, which began in November 2025.
If granted, the geographical indication would legally recognise that only avocados grown under defined conditions within specified municipalities in Michoacán may use the protected name. Producers must meet a set of cultivation and harvest standards to qualify for the designation.
Local officials said the initiative supports job creation and economic growth in Uruapan and other producing areas, where avocado farming has become a key element of regional identity and export activity. The move also reflects broader efforts to protect product origin and quality as Michoacán’s avocados maintain prominence in national and global markets.
