The EU now imports more oranges from Egypt than from South Africa. For the EU, Egypt has become the No. 1 supplier of oranges and remains the No. 2 supplier of other citrus fruits.
According to a report by MAPA, the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, regarding citrus fruit shipments to the EU from non-EU countries, Egypt has overtaken South Africa as the main provider.
Egypt, between September 2020 and July 2021, shipped around 310,000 tonnes of oranges to the EU, an increase of + 21.7% compared to the previous year. Over the same period, South Africa shipped around 290,000 tonnes of oranges to the EU, a variation of -16% from the previous year.
If all other citrus fruits (lemons, grapefruits) are taken into account, South Africa remains the leading exporter to the EU of citrus fruits from non-EU countries.
Over the same period from September 2020 to July 2021, South Africa exported 421,370 tonnes of citrus fruits to the EU, a variation of -3.5% compared to the previous season. Egypt is No. 2 with 325,256 tonnes of citrus, an increase of + 16% compared to the previous season.
