For the year 2023, the results show a clear decline in the value of Mozambique's banana exports. The main cause is the drop in production
Local media report that, according to the Bank of Mozambique, banana exports in 2023 totalled just USD 32.3 million. This is the lowest level for 6 years, and 21.9% down on the USD 41.4 million in 2022.
The main cause is the drop in production caused by extreme weather conditions (tropical storms, excessive rain, flooding, violent winds). Bananas and other crops have been severely affected.
According to figures from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Mozambique produces around 500,000 tonnes of bananas a year. Around 22% of banana production is exported.
