Consumption of fruits and vegetables slows
FJ
Italians have reduced the consumption of fruit and vegetables.
According to Coldiretti, Italian households in 2012 bought on average 331 kg of fruits and vegetables a year, while they had purchased 379 kg in 2008. In four years there has been a sharp decline in the average consumption (- 48 kg). Only 18.4% of the population consumes at least four daily servings of fruits and vegetables.
This decrease in the consumption of fruits and vegetables appears to be a consequence of the crisis. The economic difficulties lead many people to change their eating habits. But this abandonment of the principles of the Mediterranean diet could have more serious implications, such as the resurgence of some epidemics. This year, influenza hit 5.3 million Italians, 15% more than last year.
