The government of Pakistan has decided to authorize the importation of certain products, in unlimited quantities for 1 month, in order to combat the rise in prices.
Prices have been rising in the country for more than 12 months, according to PBS (Pakistan Bureau of Statistics), mainly due to disruptions in food supply chains and periodic increases in energy. For the week ending October 8th, the PBS recorded a 1% or more increase in food prices.
The prices of vegetables have climbed, especially tomatoes (200 PKR = 1.23 USD) and onions (80 PKR = 0.49 USD) and in order to lower these prices the government has decided to allow imports from Iran. These import permits will allow importers to receive as many as they want for 1 month. If the prices of tomatoes and onions do not stabilize, these import permits may be extended.
“Our government will use all the resources available to the state to bring down food prices,” Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Twitter. Ensuring that a strategy will be put in place, whatever the reasons for these increases, shortage of supply, contraband or increase due to international prices.
