Potatoes - Cold stored product is still good but wastage is high. Stocks of Maris Piper are nearly exhausted - replaced by varieties such as Markies in mid June and then Premiere/Dundrod in July. New crop Piper won’t be available until late August and will be fully underway by September.
Imported salad potatoes continue with French Agata as the quality is good. UK lifting is on target and dare I say the taste of Cornish new potatoes this year is better than Jerseys! Main lifting is still on target for the end of June / beginning of July (weather dependent).
Carrot - Wholesale prices of carrot remain extremely high with Northern European stock now finished. Most processing material is now being imported from Spain, Portugal and Israel.
Cauliflower - New Season Cauliflower is now available. Due to the nature of this crop, the curds will be flat in appearance and may bruise easily. Shelf life may be limited but this will improve during the month.
Savoy - New season is available but is in short supply until mid June. Expect a slightly pointed appearance to the cabbage, but this will change towards the end of the month. Pointed Cabbage or Spring Greens are in season and of excellent quality.
