In 2023, the El Niño phenomenon and other adverse climatic factors, such as heavy rains and pests, had a negative impact on the production and quality of Peruvian bananas, making it difficult to sell them on the international market (photo: peru.info).
In 2023, Peru exported 143,000 tons of organic bananas, with a value of $110 million, showing a drop of -14% in volume and -6% in value compared to the previous year, according to Peruvian export statistics.
Although the average price of bananas on the international market increased by +9% to $ 0.76 per kilogram, pressure from low prices in previous years affected the profitability of Peruvian banana producers, especially in the Piura region.
The El Niño phenomenon and other adverse weather factors, such as heavy rains and pests, negatively impacted banana production and quality, making it difficult to sell bananas on the international market.
As a result, many exporters redirected their production to the domestic market, where margins were more similar and the operation was simpler. However, uncertainty about the future of bananas in Peru deepened, especially due to competition with countries such as Ecuador.
In terms of export markets, the Netherlands was the main destination for Peruvian bananas, followed by the United States, Panama, Belgium, Italy, South Korea, Germany and Japan.
