Hungarian producers are suffering a poor apple harvest following low temperatures earlier in the year.
Severe May frosts and further droughts have badly hit this season's Hungarian apple harvest, with the crop falling 53 per cent to 251,000 tons this year from 2006's total yield of 537,000 tons, according to a USDA report.
The extreme conditions have led to government intervention, with compensation offered to producers to aid in the continued maintenance of orchards until the 2008 season.
Worst affected were the traditional Jonathan and Idared varieties, used primarily in the processing industry, although these still make up 55 per cent of the overall harvest.
