The sector achieved its target with 60,000 tonnes exported and 10,000 tonnes sold on the domestic market. This means a total production of 70,000 tonnes of avocados for this season (Photo: Moroccan Avocado Association).
Moroccan avocado production was only slightly affected by the drought. The northern regions of Morocco (Rabat, Kénitra, Larache, Moulay Bousselham), which account for 80% of national production, did not experience the same difficulties as the southern regions.
Local media quoted Abdellah Elyamlahi, President of MAVA (Morocco Avocado Association), as saying that the sector had achieved its objective, with 60,000 tonnes exported and 10,000 tonnes sold on the domestic market. This means a total production of 70,000 tonnes of avocados for this campaign.
The Moroccan avocado is strengthening its presence on the European market, particularly in the Netherlands, France, Spain, Germany and Italy. On these markets, the Moroccan avocado has the advantage of a very short delivery time (3 to 4 days) compared with other competitor producing countries that are geographically further away.
Prospects are good for the coming season. Excluding the vagaries of the weather and according to objective data, avocado production is set to increase further, as are exports, estimated at 80,000 tonnes.
