Cultivation area for broccoli increases 16% in 2008

Increase of 2% forecast for vegetable harvest in Germany.
The area assigned to broccoli crops in Germany has reached 2,190 hectares this year, an increase of 16% compared with 2007, according to the German Central Market and Press Office (ZMP).
The cultivation area for savoy cabbage has also risen to a total of 1,155 hectares, an increase of 10% on last year.
Overall, it is anticipated that vegetable crops will occupy an area of some 112,000 hectares this year, an increase of 3% on the area cultivated in 2007, ZMP reports. It is forecast that the 2008 vegetable harvest will increase by 2% to reach 3.23 million tonnes.
