The COVID-19 health crisis has highlighted the importance of agriculture. The Fiji government wants to make agriculture a major economic sector.
Since the 1950s, Fiji has exported ginger and this product became the second most important agricultural export product after sugar in the 1980s.
Today the Ministry of Agriculture is trying to develop the sector by various means. The ministry works in close collaboration with the competent organizations to study the means of revitalizing the sector. According to the ministry of agriculture, the sector must become a leading economic sector for Fiji.
Medium and large farms need to grow in response to market signals. The agricultural sector must become a major exporter in order to stimulate Fiji's economy.
The agricultural sector and in particular the ginger sector has enormous potential according to the ministry. Ginger exports to Australia are showing encouraging signs. And other external markets could give additional impetus to the sector.
