Belgian exporters report a shift in French vegetable sales.
Belgian exporters admit that the French market remains very important to Belgium as they export to France a large range of products going from counter season fruit and vegetables from the southern hemisphere (mainly South America or South Africa) to leeks, potaotes, and of course apple and pears. But for the fast several years, exporters have noticed a change in vegetables sales in France. Southern France, who several years ago had a very large demand for tomatoes in clusters, has cut their demand almost in half. One company reports having decreased his tomato in clusters export to France by 200 tons this year, as French importers admit to having enough with the local harvest. Fortunately, this is counter-balanced by a large increase in demand for cucumbers and suprinsigly enough, witloof. France remains the world's first witloof producer, but apparently doesn't have enough to answer to demand during the summer!
