According to analyzes by OFAG (Federal Office for Agriculture) and DEFR (Federal Department of Economics, Training and Research), consumption of fruit and vegetables in Switzerland has increased.
OFAG and DEFR analyzed the sales data communicated by Nielsen Switzerland. In the country in 2019 the retail trade sold 399,000 tonnes of fresh vegetables including potatoes, aromatic herbs, herbs and mushrooms. This volume represents an increase of 2.7% over the previous year. In value, turnover exceeded CHF 2 billion ($2.06 billion).
Fruit sales increased by 1.7% in volume to 394,000 tonnes but the turnover achieved decreased by 2.1% to CHF 1.64 billion ($1.689 billion). .
With regard to sales of organic fruit and vegetables, volumes increased and turnover also increased with + 3.9% for fruit and + 5.4% for vegetables. Demand for these products remains dynamic with 15.1% of vegetables and 13.1% of fruit sold at retail in 2019 came from organic farming.
