Bean sprouts are the cause
MD
Further analysis has confirmed that bean sprouts from organic farms are the German origin of the outbreak which caused 33 deaths.
Analysis confirmed that the bacterial strain O104: H4 E.. enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) was detected in a packet of seeds germinated from operations at Gärtnerhof Bienenbüttel. This packet was made by a man whose wife and daughter had fallen ill.
Questions that remain have unanswered. How did the bacteria spread? water? man? The Institute of Risk Prevention (BfR) states that the strain of the bacteria is human and not bovine origin, which would explain its resistance to antibiotics. Additional analysis is underway.
According to German authorities, the organic farm in question has met the specifications, materials, processes and is everything is in order.
