Growers fear competition
United Kingdom

British apple growers fear the extinction of some varieties because supermarkets would rather buy cheap products from abroad than use the domestic ones. Growers find themselves forced to sell their production at a loss to the fruit juice industry. Large-scale distribution defends itself against it by saying one in three apples sold is British and that growers should be prepared to be more flexible and invest in more popular varieties in order to ensure the sector remains competitive.
