Guatemala is the fifth largest producer of mangoes in Latin America, after Mexico, Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. The exported mangoes are mainly destined for the United States, Central America and the countries of Europe.
AGEXPORT, the Guatemalan exporters' association, plans to create new opportunities for producers by opening new markets. This year, exports to Chile will be able to begin, the protocols having been signed. Guatemala will be the first Central American country to supply this South American market.
Negotiations are underway to access Asian markets, particularly Japan and South Korea. Last year Guatemala exported about 22,679 tonnes of fresh mangoes to the United States, Central America and Europe, mainly to the Netherlands.
