Strong growth driven by key products like durian, dragon fruit, and mango, with projections aiming even higher

Earlier this month, the Department of Crop Production, the Vietnam Gardening Association, and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hoa Binh province, in collaboration with related organizations and Vietnam Agriculture Newspaper, organized a forum aimed at enhancing the quality, value chain, and market access of fruit tree products in northern Vietnam.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reported that Vietnam's fruit and vegetable sector has reached a new milestone, achieving an export turnover of $6.66 billion in the first 11 months of 2024, a 28.2% increase over the previous year. Key exports, including dragon fruit, banana, durian, jackfruit, and mango, have driven this growth, with projections suggesting total exports could surpass $7.2 billion by year-end.

Northern Vietnam, with its fertile soil and favorable climate, is well-suited for cultivating various fruits such as longan, lychee, orange, and grapefruit. The region has opened markets for 19 types of fresh fruit in key countries, including the United States, China, Japan, South Korea, and the EU.

Hoa Binh province, with 16,000 hectares dedicated to fruit farming, is focusing on expanding its agricultural value chains through initiatives like garden renovation, citrus replanting projects, and trade promotion. The province boasts 88 growing area codes, 53 of which are designated for exports. Its main products, such as oranges, bananas, and grapefruits, have secured stable markets domestically and internationally, including the United States, Canada, and the EU.

Despite these successes, challenges remain in boosting the added value of fruit products, with most consumed fresh due to limited preservation and processing facilities. The forum emphasized sustainable development, technical improvements, integrated pest management, and post-harvest solutions to further enhance the sector’s growth.
