The banana genome has been sequenced to support variety improvement.
French scientists have managed to sequence the banana genome.
CIRAD researchers and CEA-Genoscope just completed the sequencing of the species Musa acuminata, which is a component of all the edible varieties (bananas for desserts or cooking). Sequencing enables access to all 36,000 genes and their position along 11 chromosomes.
This will
facilitate the identification of genes responsible for disease resistance and improved varieties. The banana plant is subject to constant threats from parasites and is crucial for food security and economic development for over 400 million people in developing countries.
The results are published in the prestigious scientific journal "Nature". Sequence the banana genome is available for open access on: http://banana-genome.cirad.fr
