Malaysia targets 30% cut in red onion imports by 2030

Malaysia is launching a national red onion seed programme to cut import dependence.
Malaysia aims to reduce its dependence on imported red onions by 30% by 2030 through a structured local seed production programme led by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi).
At present, Malaysia imports nearly all of its red onions, worth over RM2.6 billion (≈ $546 million) each year. Early trials in Kelantan have shown strong results, producing up to five tonnes per season, and the project is now expanding. National seed output is expected to reach 50,000 kg by 2026.
The plan includes distributing locally developed seeds across states such as Perak, Selangor, and Sabah. Selling prices currently range between RM7 and RM10 (≈ $1.47 – $2.10) per kg, offering attractive returns for farmers.
Officials say this initiative will enhance food security, lower import spending, and open new income opportunities for local growers.
