The circumstances are favorable for quality Belgian peppers. Pepper cultivation areas have more than doubled in a few years.
In Belgium, the FLANDRIA pepper cultivation area is growing. In 2000, the areas devoted to the cultivation of peppers totaled 79 hectares for a harvest of 14,400 tons. Today, the cultivated area has reached 176 hectares and the current 21 producers have planned to harvest 50,000 tonnes.
FLANDRIA offers peppers in 4 different colors: green, red, yellow and orange. The 2 most important cooperatives, BelOrta and the Hoogstraten Cooperative, bring together Belgian and Dutch producers. For these 2 cooperatives, red pepper is by far the most important segment and alone accounts for 42% of production with 18,950 tonnes, followed by green peppers with 16,200 tonnes, yellow whose production reaches some 8,500 tonnes and finally the orange pepper with 1,050 tonnes produced.
The peppers are available in bulk (plastic or cardboard), but also in different packaging such as the bag or the tricolor tray, but also the duo tray and other packaging. As well as the sweet elongated Sweet Palermo® pepper.
