India soon to become largest producer of fruits and vegetables

India could soon overtake China for the production of fruits and vegetables, said the director of IIHR (Indian Institute of Horticultural Research).


Currently, India's production is about 211 million tons of fruits and vegetables, or half that of China. Production could easily be improved by reducing post-harvest wastage, estimated at 35

Increased production will also come with more agricultural mechanisation and improved seeds. These recommendations are in the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017) which aims to boost agricultural production in India. Productivity is still low at 16.13 tons per hectare of crop production.
