According to local media reports, South Africa and Japan have finalized the protocol for shipments of South African avocados to the Japanese market.
The 1st shipments to Japan should take place in June, following the necessary registrations and inspections of farms and packing plants, and assurance that the fruit will be ripe enough to withstand the required cold treatment protocol (2°C for 19 days).
In South Africa, the avocado harvest starts in February in the earliest areas, and the 1st shipments to the European Union and the United Kingdom begin in March.
Access to Japan, Southeast Asia's largest importer and consumer of avocados (100,000 tons per year), is a welcome diversification of destination markets. The European Union and the UK currently absorb 95% of South Africa's avocado exports.
