Chinese consumers delighted by Chilean avocado
The Hass Avocado Committee of Chile, which brings together producers and exporters of avocado in Chile announced that, for the third consecutive year, they would promote the avocado in China this year, based on the good results seen over the past years, with preferred season from July to April.
China began importing avocados from Chile and Mexico in 2011 which led to today’s reports, where Chile has surpassed Mexico, and now leading as the greatest supplier of avocados to China.
According to Francisco Contardo, General Manager of the Hass Avocado Committee of Chile, last season avocados grew by nearly 34 percent in terms of volume in the Chinese market, where consumers are increasingly learning to consume avocados. Currently, ten percent of Chile’s total Hass avocado exports are exported to China, it ensures a steady output and zero tariffs under a Sino-Chile free trade agreement.
Consumption of avocados is now a growing trend and symbol of health in Chinese markets. Avocados used to be an exotic fruit that came with a high price tag in China, but no more, thanks to rising trade with Latin America.
The focus this year is on educating on how much to consume, how to consume it, and knowing the right moment for consumption, according to its color and texture.
