Spain Is Also a Champion in Fruit and Vegetable Exports
Recent sports news has propelled Spain to the top of the global soccer scene following the Spanish national team's victory over Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final
The Spanish Federation of Fruit and Vegetable Exporters (FEPEX) is using the sports angle to highlight that the country also holds leading international positions in this sector.
Europe’s Leading Producer
Within the European Union, Spain is the leading producer of fruits and vegetables, with 28 million metric tons, according to FAO data for 2023, followed closely by Italy, with 27 million metric tons, and France, with 22 million metric tons. In addition, Spain is also the EU’s leading fruit and vegetable exporter, with 10 million metric tons of fresh fruits and vegetables destined for the EU market in 2024, which accounts for 25% of intra-EU trade, ahead of the Netherlands, with 9.5 million metric tons and 24%, and France, with 4.8 million metric tons and 12%.
World’s Leading Exporter
On the global stage, total fruit and vegetable production reached 1,966 million metric tons in 2023, according to FAO data. Spain ranks first in export value and eleventh in the international production ranking, with 29.1 million metric tons.
