Chile targets easier fruit exports to key Asian markets

Chile is preparing a new round of negotiations aimed at improving access for its fresh fruit in China, Vietnam and Indonesia.

Frutas de Chile recently met with Agriculture Undersecretary Francesco Venezian and his advisers to agree on the main issues to be raised during an official Asian tour planned for August 2026.

The visit is expected to turn several earlier technical agreements into formal protocols and make some export procedures simpler for Chilean suppliers.

China

In China, Chile wants to discuss changes to cold-treatment requirements, including permitted temperatures and the use of ship holds during transport.

The talks will also cover labelling rules, fruit movement and logistics. Chilean officials are expected to meet Chinese customs authorities to discuss quarantine zones created after fruit fly detections.

Frutas de Chile said more flexible rules could reduce export difficulties while continuing to meet China’s plant-health requirements.

Vietnam

One of the main goals in Vietnam is to formalise a protocol allowing Chilean cherries transported by air to enter without cold treatment.

Sea shipments would continue to require the quarantine treatment.

Chile is also seeking progress on market access for kiwifruit and blueberries under similar conditions. A technical visit by Vietnamese authorities to Chile is being planned for 2027 to examine the proposed procedures.

Indonesia

Discussions in Indonesia will focus on the recognition of fruit fly-free production areas.

The two sides are also expected to review progress towards opening the Indonesian market to Chilean mandarins and oranges.

Frutas de Chile said the talks could create new commercial opportunities while strengthening the export protocols already in place.

Wider talks during APEC meetings

The Asian tour will also include bilateral meetings linked to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.

Chile expects to hold discussions with agriculture ministers and officials from countries including Japan, South Korea, the Philippines and Mexico.

Frutas de Chile plans to accompany the undersecretary during the tour and said closer cooperation between the government and the fruit industry is important for completing agreements and improving export conditions.
