China’s garlic exports rise as prices fall

China exported 848,500 tonnes of garlic between January and April 2026, an increase of 11.6% year on year, according to China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.

Despite the higher volume, export revenue fell by 15.8% to USD 1.04 billion. The average export price also declined by 24.6%, reaching USD 1,226 per tonne. The ministry based its report on data from China Customs.

Domestic supply also remains high. In Henan, new dried garlic was selling for CNY 2.4–3.6 per kg (approximately USD 0.35–0.53 per kg), around 36% below the previous year. The ministry expects prices to remain relatively low during the third quarter, although limited supplies of higher-quality garlic may lead to a wider price difference between grades.

A separate official customs update said Xuzhou Customs supervised exports of 122,000 tonnes of fresh garlic between January and May 2026, an increase of approximately 20.2% year on year.
