Record imports of apples, in volume and value

Fuji apple rules the market, where it accounts for 90 % of total retail sales. The rest of the market is composed of the varieties Gala, Red Delicious and Granny Smith.

Apples are the most imported Taiwain fruits and consumer favorite range is Fuji .

According to the report of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA Foreign Agricultural Service ) for the 2013-14 season Taiwan imported 160,756 tonnes of apples whose value is estimated at $ 240 million . This represents an increase of + 18% in volume and + 29 % in value.

These figures of the 2013-14 season are the record of the history of apple imports to Taiwan. The country has one of the world's highest consumption rate (132 kg / person / year ), while its domestic production is minimal : only 175 hectares of orchards and 1,292 tons of fresh apples .

Countries that have benefited most from this growth are Chile, which increased its exports of + 50% to 62 343 tonnes and New Zealand with + 180 % and 21 836 tonnes exported. Other major suppliers have seen their volumes decline, as the United States (-25%) , France (-43%) and Canada.
