A research project that will bring together all Canadian experts, from researchers to producers and manufacturers to successfully develop the perfect fruit.
In Canada, the third largest strawberry producer in North America, the Department of Agriculture has announced an investment of CAD 1.3 million (US $ 994,000) for a research project on strawberry and raspberry varieties.
The project aims to coordinate research at the national level to produce new varieties that are both more resilient and better adapted to market expectations.
In four provinces (Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia, British Columbia) the research centers will test plant selections and share their experiences. This research will be closely related to the needs of producers.
According to forecasts, the project will focus the first year on 20 selections of strawberries and 10 of raspberries. Then within 5 years, 3 or 4 new marketable varieties of strawberries and raspberries can be proposed.
