Chinese consumers are 60% to consider the criterion "non-GMO" important and 49% of Italian consumers to consider important the criterion "locally made or using local ingredients".
GfK, a specialist in market and consumer analytics, conducted a large online survey of 17 countries, interviewing 23,000 consumers about the importance of certain factors when choosing food (food, beverages).
The results show that consumers are opting for a healthier and natural diet. Nearly half (48%) of respondents say that low or no sugar is "extremely" or "very" important to them, and an equal number say the same for products that do not contain sugar, genetically modified organisms or ingredients (GMOs).
In the ranking of criteria, products with low sodium or salt content (45%), then organic products or products containing organic ingredients (44%), and products that are low in fat or fat-free (44%) and products enriched with vitamins or minerals (44%). The criterion manufactured locally or with local ingredients only concerned 38% of respondents.
The most selective consumers for their food purchases are the thirties. As far as countries are concerned, Chinese consumers seem to be the most selective, putting 8 of the 9 decision criteria under consideration, with the exception of locally made products.
