800 new hypermarkets in Russia are expected to open in the next 5 years, according to analysts Infoline.
The first hypermarket opened in Russia in the 1990s and they increased rapidly until 2008, when the effects of the crisis slowed their progress. But as the economic situation improves, the big chains have increased openings. Last year, a hundred shops sprung up, bringing the total stores of more than 3000 m2 to 580
.
The Russian Magnit chain opened 42 hypermarkets becoming the largest chain stores nationwide. Okey and Metro Group opened 7 new hypermarkets each, X5 Retail Group 6 new stores and Auchan 5.
Infolines notes, however, that the hypermarket format is underdeveloped in Russia and expects strong growth, with the opening of 800 new hypermarkets over the next 5 years.
