Increases planned for the production of oranges (+ 5.2%), mandarins (+ 21%), lemons (+ 11.7%) and grapefruits (+ 8%). These increases are expected to lead to lower imports into the EU (Photo: Citricos Valencianos / rica.chil.me).
Favorable weather conditions in the main citrus-producing countries of the European Union contributed to this growth forecast for the 2020/21 season (October / September) of around + 10.4% compared to the previous season.
According to a recent GAIN report, from USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), EU citrus production for MY 2020/21 (October / September) is expected to reach 11.7 million tonnes, or +10 , 4% compared to the previous campaign.
For this 2020/21 season, EU orange production is expected to increase to 6.5 million tonnes, or + 5.2% compared to the previous season. Mandarin production is expected to reach 3.4 million tonnes, up 21% from the previous season, mainly due to strong growth in Spanish production. Lemon production is expected to reach 1.654 million tonnes, or + 11.7% compared to the previous season. Grapefruit production is expected to reach 103,000 tonnes, up 8% from the previous season.

Spain and Italy are the main citrus producers in the EU, followed by Greece, Portugal and Cyprus.
