The avocado crop is smaller than forecasted

The Chilean Avocado Importers Association (CAIA) forecast a smaller avocado crop for the 2010-2011 season than originally projected.

According to new projections, the crop should be identical as the 2008-2009 season.

This decrease of production is due to lack of rain and a cold late spring. 100 to 120 million pounds of Chilean Hass avocados will be exported.

Most of them will be shipped to the United States. Europe receives about 23 to 25 % of the production, but this year, with the crop reduction, exports will decrease.

Tha AICA is composed of importers, exporters and producers. The objective of the association is to develop consumption of Chilean Hass avocados in the United States. These products are available from August to March when California avocados are out of season.
