Maersk, the World No. 1, will move away from its container activities.
Maersk, the leading operator worldwide for containers, has made a change in strategic direction.
Nils Andersen, CEO of the conglomerate AP Moeller-Maersk has unveiled to the "Financial Times" a strategic shift . Maersk will no longer significantly invest in its container business to refocus during the next 5 years in oil and its ports (Maersk Oil, AMP Terminals).
The group hoped for rising demand of 4% for the transport of containers
this year but the increase will be only 3%. The slowdown in demand between Europe and Asia has already forced Maersk to reduce its capabilities.
The group will turn to activities that generate more profits. Maersk Line, which holds 16% market share last year recorded a loss of $540 million while the oil industry earned $ 2.1 billion, oil drilling activities 495 millionand port 649 million.
