Vegetables represent nearly 37% of agricultural output in Kagawa prefecture

Vegetable output surpasses fruit and other farm products in value.
Located on Japan’s Seto Inland Sea and close to major urban consumption centres in western Japan, Kagawa Prefecture plays a strategic role in domestic fresh produce supply, particularly for vegetables distributed through regional wholesale markets.
According to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) in mid-January, vegetables account for 36.9% of total agricultural output value in the prefecture, making them the largest agricultural segment by value. The figure highlights the central role of vegetable production in Kagawa’s farming economy.
MAFF attributes this structure to the prefecture’s emphasis on market-oriented cultivation, supported by established distribution routes and steady domestic demand. Vegetable production outweighs other agricultural categories, including fruit, in value terms.
Fruit production remains an important secondary component of Kagawa’s agricultural output, contributing to income diversification and seasonal supply. While its share is lower than vegetables, fruit continues to support the prefecture’s fresh produce profile.
