A new study conducted in the United Kingdom on food waste finds that fruit is the 1st food thrown away. The average Briton throws away about 245 GBP (284 USD) worth of fruit per year because they didn't eat it in time.
According to research by Discarded Spirits, more than half of Britons (56%) throw away fruit, with another (35%) admitting to throwing it away all the time. The study learns that fruits are the 1st food to be forgotten or to rot in refrigerators. The most wasted fruits are bananas (57%), strawberries (42%), apples (30%), raspberries (19%), oranges (19%) and pears (18%).
The reasons invoked to explain this wastage are multiple: forgetting purchased fruit and discovering a rotten part; a shelf life of fruit that seems shorter to the consumer; little ability to cook or otherwise use fruit.
As well as various wasted fruits, certain vegetables such as cucumbers (24%), tomatoes (20%) and avocado (12%) are also likely to be thrown away by UK consumers.
According to Discarded Spirits, this trend towards food waste must be fought by developing new creations, such as drinks or spirits that could give a second life to discarded fruits and vegetables.
