With an annual production of 1,117,000 tons of papaya, Mexico continues to be the fourth largest producer in the world and the main exporter of this fruit, with a total of 169,000 tons sent abroad, according to local media.
In the period from January to April 2022, exports of fresh Mexican papaya, along with watermelon and melon, grew 14.25% compared to the same period in 2021, totaling $184 million, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Development federal country.
According to Francisco Javier Trujillo Arriaga, director of the National Service for Agrifood Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica), from 2020 to date, 250 production sites of said fruit have been certified in Pollution Risk Reduction Systems of 83 companies, in Jalisco, Colima, Campeche, Chiapas, Michoacán, Tabasco, Nayarit, San Luis Potosí, Tamaulipas and Veracruz.
