World Avocado Congress is taking place in Medellin from 24 to 26 September at the Plaza Mayor Congress Center. The event brings together the entire chain of production of the avocado. World Avocado Organization participates for the first time in the event.
"There is no doubt that this is a very important event for the country. Before the year 2000, Colombia did not exist in the sector of the avocado and today we organize the 9th edition of World Avocado Congress. The cultivation of this fruit has grown, and at present we have about 20,000 hectares planted with avocado and about 89,000 hectares if all varieties produced in the country are included.
Exports are growing rapidly, with 30,000 tonnes worth $ 60 million exported to June. We expect to reach $ 90 million by the end of the year, "Agriculture Minister Andrés Valencia Pinzón said at the inauguration.
