UNITEC's Cherry Vision 3.0 systems installed in the Spanish companies Frutas Mifra, Llamfruit Cherry, Rio Cinca.
In Spain, unfavorable weather conditions have led to quality defects but "UNITEC's Cherry Vision 3.0 technology has proven to be a formidable ally throughout the cherry harvesting and conditioning campaign" underlined Miguel Vicente Juan, General Manager by Frutas Mifra.
Adverse weather conditions coupled with COVID-19 issues made this cherry campaign complicated. But UNITEC's Cherry Vison 3.0 technology served as an ally for Frutas Mifra: "Working manually would have been very complicated and would have led to a considerable increase in costs, both for harvesting and for sorting the cherries. We were pleasantly surprised by the ability of the Cherry Vision 3.0 system to detect defects, including the slightest apical damage, as well as most of the defects that compromise the integrity of the cherry, ”said Miguel Vicente Juan of Frutas Mifra.
In fact, UNITEC's Cherry Vision 3.0 is equipped with a large number of very high-resolution cameras, which allow 100% of each cherry to be viewed, thus detecting the slightest defect. Including apical damage, that is, lesions or cracks at the base of the fruit, a very insidious type of defect. If the campaign is marked by intense rains and hail, like the one that has just ended, Cherry Vision 3.0 technology becomes essential because without it, it is really difficult to separate the damaged fruits from the "healthy" fruits”. (And we end up compromising even the quality of these).
UNITEC's Cherry Vision 3.0 provides substantial reduction in loss and waste, and helps “save” batches of product whose marketing selection costs would otherwise be unsustainable. Reduction of costs and, at the same time, enhancement of the "healthy" product: thanks to Cherry Vision 3.0 and its reliability in classifying cherries according to a multiplicity of parameters, cherries can be sorted into different categories, each one being aimed at a specific target audience and a particular distribution channel.
The advantages of UNITEC technology were also put forward by Carlos Llambrich, Managing Director of Llamfruit Cherry: "The ability to keep correct prices, to avoid complaints, even in a very complicated year, and to reap all fruits. Without Cherry Vision 3.0 technology, we would not have been able to harvest because we would not have been able to separate the healthy fruits from the damaged ones". Thanks to reliability and precision in quality sorting, Llamfruit Cherry has obtained trays of cherries that meet the requirements of its customers and meet the expectations of end consumers. Cherry Vision 3.0 helps build a relationship of trust between the producer and the consumer, who never feels betrayed; all this also helps to eliminate the risk of disputes and complaints due to possible discrepancies between the product agreed at the time of sale and that delivered.
Rio Cinca, another fruit and vegetable powerhouse, also expressed its gratitude for this technology which, despite the critical climatic conditions, has enabled it to obtain a positive judgment from its customers: "This latest evolution of Cherry Vision has really enabled Rio Cinca to once again improve the quality offered. Despite a critical season due to heavy rains, the end result was extraordinary: we succeeded, thanks to the help of quality selection technology of UNITEC, to be qualified as the best Spanish company in terms of quality by our customers", declared the Commercial Director Oscar Ortiz.
Without forgetting the increase in production efficiency, the possibility of processing larger volumes of fruit and the substantial reduction in labor and processing costs, as stated by Jordi Mora Badía, boss of the Central Frutas David: "The advances resulting from the evolution of Cherry Vision in version 3.0 are more than satisfactory, especially in a delicate year like the one we are experiencing. The improvement of the fault viewer has enabled us to detect damage to the cherries that otherwise would have had to be detected visually by operators. All of this translates into savings in production and also a significant advantage in terms of harvest. "
In addition, reducing the number of people involved in the selection process helps operators to work within safety distances. And the added value of automation goes far beyond, to the point of becoming a guarantee of safety also for the consumer: UNITEC cherry lines minimize operator contact with the product during the various stages of processing. https://en.unitec-group.com/
