In Russia, greenhouse tomato production increased by 52% last year.
Real boom in investment in greenhouse vegetable production and a 33% increase in production (+ 26% for pickles and + 52% for tomatoes) last year in Russia.
Today the greenhouses occupy 2,300 hectares according to the greenhouse association of Russia, 166 hectares were built in 2016. The growth of the greenhouse surfaces gives an increase in the volumes produced and leads to a reduction of the imports. Before the embargo Russia imported about 70% of its tomato needs, but less than 60% in 2016 with the growth of its greenhouse areas.
Demand for greenhouse vegetables from Russian consumers is about 1.8 million tonnes per year. To meet this, the country must increase its production and thus the construction of new greenhouses. An additional 2,000 hectares would be needed, but construction forecasts announce an additional 150 hectares for 2017.
