Pakistan threatened by a shortage of vegetables in 10 years
MD
If no action is taken to increase yields in Pakistan, a severe shortage of vegetables will take place within 10 years, wards the PDCA (Pakistan Fruits and Vegetables Export) association.
The association even suggested that the country might become an importer of fruits and vegetables in 10 years. Pakistan has increased its exports to record levels, but the PDCA believes that exports will inevitably decline if performance is not increased.
According to the association, 2.2 million tons of vegetables and 2.8 to 3 million tons of fruit are discarded each year. The loss of 30% of the production of vegetables and 40% of the fruit is significant and and will affect future exports.
The PDCA also highlights the lack of funding for research and development and under-equipped infrastructure. It adds that the only way for Pakistan to continue to export its agricultural products and feed its people is to increase yields.
