The citrus fruit sector in Castellón (Spain) is facing difficulties caused by declining production due to climate change, narrow trade margins, a reduction in consumption in Europe and competition from third countries with lower prices.
Over the last five years, this sector has experienced considerable losses with the disappearance of 23 companies and cooperatives, according to figures from the Castellon Exporters' Association.
In the current season, Castellón has 65 businesses, marking a decrease of 5 companies compared to the previous season. Compared to 2015, the reduction is 30%, as at that time there were 88 firms operating. The situation becomes particularly critical in the field of cooperatives, where the number has almost halved over a five-year period.
There has been a loss of 7,914 hectares since 2015 due to low profits from the activity, which in turn makes it difficult for new producers to enter.
In this context, farmers' associations are calling for a reinforcement in the promotion and implementation of aid for the renewal of fields, seeking to revitalise and strengthen the sustainability of the citrus sector in Castellón.
