Peru opens Argentine market to banana exports
VU
Peru has secured sanitary approval to export fresh bananas to Argentina after a technical evaluation and agreement between the two countries’ plant health authorities.
Peru has opened the Argentine market to its fresh banana exports, a move that strengthens the country’s agro-export sector and creates new sales opportunities for thousands of small and medium-sized producers, according to the National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa).
Argentina has now officially published the import requirements, confirming approval. Shipments of Peruvian bananas must be accompanied by an Import Phytosanitary Authorisation (AFIDI) and an Export Phytosanitary Certificate, and must be free from pests including Opogona sacchari, Aspidiotus destructor and Selenaspidus articulatus.
The new access opens the door to a market of more than 45 million consumers and supports export diversification. Peru’s banana production is concentrated mainly in Piura, Tumbes and Lambayeque, with around 9,000 producers in Piura alone, most operating small farms focused on exports.
