The milder weather of recent weeks has led to an early start of the 2019 asparagus season.
The first harvests began mid-March. Asparagus is still expensive (16 to 20 euros per kilo) but in a few days all important regions will produce and volumes will increase rapidly.
Last year, 129,600 tonnes of asparagus were harvested in Germany. This year's production is expected to be similar even though professionals in the Brandenburg region expect production to be slightly lower than the 23,200 tonnes produced last year.
In Germany, asparagus is grown on more than 23,000 hectares, making it by far the number one vegetable. For asparagus, the country's self-sufficiency rate is above 80%.
