The west coast of the United States, including California, is particularly affected by drought, the intensity of which is classified as "exceptional", "extreme" or "severe" (Photo: droughtmonitor.uni.edu).
In the United States, just over half of the country's soils are considered to have "adequate" moisture. Today, more than 93% of the greater West region experiences moderate drought or severe drought, according to U.S. Drought Monitor, the U.S. Drought Observatory.
In the Northwest region the unprecedented heat has resulted in worsening conditions. Temperatures were 20 to 30 ° F above normal and the excess heat dramatically increased evaporation, further drying out soils and vegetation. Many areas have gone through severe drought (D2) and extreme drought (D3). Now much of the greater West region is classified as severe drought.
In addition to the greater West region, the Upper Midwest area is also facing drought, which worries farmers in the state of Wisconsin. Despite watering, the water evaporates and dries up immediately, according to a grower, a producer in the state who grows berries and vegetables.
Record heat was also recorded in the greater Northeast region which led to an extension of the drought, several states taking measures to save water. Elsewhere in the country, numerous heavy rains resulted in large-scale improvements, and intense rainfall along the Gulf of Mexico coast helped reduce or remove remaining pockets of abnormal drought.
