Colombia’s uchuva chain reaches around 25 international markets

Colombia has consolidated its position as the leading global producer and exporter of uchuva, with the fruit ranking fifth among the country’s fresh-fruit exports, according to the national foreign-trade association, Analdex.

Analdex says the fruit reaches around 25 international markets, with the Netherlands, Germany, the United States and Canada among its main destinations. The export chain is supported by production in areas including Cundinamarca, Boyacá, Antioquia, Nariño and the Santander departments.

Its importance is not limited to overseas sales. More than 1,500 families of small producers, typically working plots of no more than two hectares, are linked to the sector. Around 45% of production costs are associated with labour, particularly manual harvesting and post-harvest work.

Analdex also estimates that approximately 40% of production goes to processing and the domestic market.
